Gender Roles Reversed

IMG_4372

While scrolling through an app called Yik Yak (kind of like an anonymous twitter) I came across this picture. It is a couple screen shots from tumblr showing what comes up when you search “women are” and “men are.” What I thought was interesting was the fact that this was the exact opposite of what popped up when you looked those two phrases up on Google. This reminded me of our lesson on gender and visual culture because in the past– and to some extent, even now– men are seen as superior to women. But, on this blog website, the opposite is shown to be true. Maybe it has to do with the fact that the majority of people who are on tumblr are female, or maybe it is just because tumblr is full of over eager people who take feminism to mean that women are superior to men.  In addition, I did not crop the picture in any way to show that this is a screen shot of one app being posted on another app, another thing that I found interesting since social media is so prevalent in our society today. Thanks for reading, and GO FROGS!

TCU Icons

These two images include two of the icons of TCU – Frog Fountain and Superfrog.  Most of my friends from back home have never stepped foot in the great state of Texas, let alone on the Texas Christian University campus.  But there are a few things that they know are unique to our school, and that’s the fountain and our mascot.

When you do a Google search of TCU Campus, Frog Fountain is one of the first images you see, and continue to see as you scroll through the collection of photographs.  When you go on your campus tour as a prospective freshman, Frog Fountain is likely to be one of the sights your guide will point out.  They may even mention that this is a popular place to take pictures.  Superfrog is one of the faces of TCU sports.  We are one of a couple of dozen schools that get to say that our mascot is unique; no one else has a Horned Frog running through their student section during football and basketball games.  With our trip to Special Collections, I was able to see just how far TCU has come since its beginnings in Fort Worth.
